Classroom Extension - Balderstone St Leonards C of E Primary School, Blackburn

About project

Type:  New Build

Value:  £189k

Completion:  2021

CCO was involved with this exciting new build classroom extension at Balderstone St Leonards, from the initial feasibility study to practical completion. The school was experiencing difficulties with one of their existing classrooms which was located at the centre of the school with no access to natural light or ventilation. The proposed solution was to construct a new extension at the front of the school building to replace the existing classroom. As part of these works, the former classroom was remodelled and a large new internal opening was created to enable this space to be accessed from the main hall.

The school is located next to St Leonard’s Church Balderstone which is Grade II listed. It was therefore important that the new extension respected the character and materiality of the surrounding context. The new extension comprises of two interlocking pitched roof structures, the smaller of which forms the cloaks and entrance area from the playground. The palette of materials is locally sourced including reclaimed random coursed natural stonework. A large feature window has been provided on the gable end which reflects the existing window on the original building which dates back to 1894, a 2021 date stone has been provided on the new extension to mark the new chapter in the school’s development.
