CCO were approached by the Governors of Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School to prepare a feasibility study and investigate the options available to address the school’s restricted dining facilities. Following a review of the options available to improve the school’s existing dining facilities CCO successfully secured funding from the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) following a bid to the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) to fund an extension to the school’s existing dining facilities.
The new two storey extension to the east of the school site extends the existing dining areas located on both the ground and first floors, providing ample new seating areas. The new staircase links the existing ground, mezzanine and first floors and gives access to the new dining areas whilst also providing a secondary means of escape.
Externally the extension is clad in natural stonework with feature areas of horizontal rainscreen cladding panels, the building is contemporary in nature but is in keeping with the materiality of the surrounding school buildings. The design brief internally particularly for the sixth form dining area was to create a modern dining space suitable for older students. In order to create this aesthetic, the existing exposed sandstone walls have been retained and complemented with modern internal finishes and colour scheme.
The new extension has transformed the school’s existing dining facilities and provides students with much needed additional dining spaces to eat, socialise and study.
