International Languages Centre Keswick School, Cumbria

About project

Type:  New Build

Value:  £1m

Completion:  2018

CCO were involved with this exciting new build international languages centre at Keswick School, from the initial feasibility study to practical completion. The consultancy successfully secured CIF funding from the ESFA for the project to address the capacity constraints in the existing accommodation, which were preventing the school from increasing their admissions to meet the high demand for places.

The new building is situated at the heart of the elevated school site and benefits from outstanding views overlooking the Lake District National Park, which has recently been named a Unesco World Heritage site.

The new building comprises of two interlocking pitched roof buildings which are a modern interpretation of the traditional form of the existing school building. The palette of materials are locally sourced and reflect the surrounding local context with a combination of neutral render and slate work used. Large areas of curtain walling and generous glazing throughout ensures the building makes the most of the picturesque surroundings.

Within the building, there are six new state of the art languages classrooms all featuring interactive whiteboards, office, spacious entrance lobby area and toilet facilities. A sustainable air source heat pump has also been installed which provides a renewable energy source to serve the underfloor heating provided throughout the building.

The international languages centre was officially opened by Trudy Harrison MP on the 18th January 2019.
