Sports Hall Waterloo Primary Academy, Blackpool
About project
Type: New Build
Value: £680k
Completion: 2017
CCO were approached by Waterloo Primary Academy in Blackpool to design a new multi-use hall for the school. The new hall provides a much needed large open space for this popular sports orientated school to accommodate PE lessons as well as school assemblies, events, plays/performances and parents evenings etc.
The challenge for CCO when designing this project was to create a modern ‘volume’ building which also reflected the original Victorian school building and the various extensions & alterations which have been carried out over the years. The two mono pitch buildings which make up the sports hall mirror each other to create the appearance of one continuous pitched roof building, and is a contemporary interpretation of the surrounding vernacular. The combination of the high level glazing, exposed glulam beams and vinyl timber effect sports flooring create a warm and inviting interior. Sustainability has also been incorporated into the project through the installation of an air source heat pump which provides a renewable energy source to heat the building.
The hall has been designed with generous floor to ceiling heights, to enable a wide array of sports to be played within the space. The new sports hall also features a mezzanine viewing gallery and group room facility both of which overlook the main hall.
“The project was completed to the highest standard, and the school are extremely pleased and proud of it.” School Business Manager, Waterloo Primary Academy
